Department of Fisheries Technology |
Department of Fisheries Technology (FT) is one of the oldest departments in the university – and the oldest in the Faculty of Fisheries. |
This department provides curriculum for both the Undergraduate and Post-graduate students. Students are trained to equip themselves so that they can play a management role in the fish harvesting, processing and preservation sectors of the industry and also serve as a preparation for higher degree research inside and outside of the country. This has been possible due to the strong and highly cooperative faculty, homing 9 (nine) Ph.D. holders as teachers and mentors. Equipped with 4 (four) laboratories, the department is also providing good research facilities with the help of highly skilled and experienced lab assistants. |
The department plays a crucial role at the B.Sc. Fisheries (Hons.) program by offering 5 (five) compulsory courses and 4 (four) elective courses at the Undergraduate level. Another 30-40 post-graduate students are also taken each semester for the MS program. Ph.D. students are also taken depending on the availability of research funds. Due to the emerging food safety concerns for assurance of safe food for domestic consumers, the department is continuing various research activities including formalin in fish food issue. The teachers of the department played an important role to overcome the crisis during the year 1995 when the fish processing industries were banned from the export market due to lack of HACCP requirements. Also in 2009, implementation of traceability for aquaculture products was successfully tested with the assistance of department staffs, Department of Fisheries (DoF) of the Government of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and now being implemented throughout the country which is a prerequisite for exported fish and shrimp products to EU countries. The FT-Alumni are achieving incredibly all around the country and abroad, and working for the betterment of the globe. |
